The gullibility of the manager was both entertaining and frightening, but no surprise. Taking pictures of people in the bathroom is creepy.

None of it is surprising, really; in fact, everything goes off as you'd expect it to. But the fact that they actually went and did it (with pictures and audio!) makes for a good read.

My friend Todd Simmons worked as a professional bathroom attendant for three years in Manhattan.

Dude. He should write a book. Or they should make a sitcom about him. Or something.

[this is good. Kottke or not, thanks for posting it]

I absolutely love the Improv Anywhere missions. Every one that I've read about has been fascinating.

That said, I totally don't understand the concept of a bathroom attendant. I've been using bathrooms for the last 40 years without professional assistance, so the phenomenon is pretty alien to me.

The first paragraph reminded me of this month' s prank in Jane magazine, where a couple of staffers brought a velvet rope and made a VIP section in a Wendy's in New York.

The strangest place I ever saw a bathroom attendant? The North Carolina State Fair. Yes indeedy.

After a full day of stuffing yourself with deep fried candy bars, touching the meat goats, riding the tilt-whirl, and fingering the turquoise sateen jumpsuit sewn by a 4-H club member, you could go to the potty and there she was. Mostly directing traffic. Handing out the occasional paper towel. Although there were several signs telling us to "remember to tip the attendant" I don't think she was making much money.

The gullibility of the manager was both entertaining and frightening

Not surprising, but not for the reasons I think you're implying. Fundamental rule of guerilla theatre and public illegal art. Act like a criminal and they will treat you like one. I altered this billboard right next to a freeway offramp during rush hour traffic at 5pm and Sun was still shining. A hundred cars drove by us at 10 mph, nobody saw nothing. Why? Because we were wearing workmen jumpsuits and had ladders, we're supposed to be there.

This man had the standard bathroom items, the tux and patter, he spoke first and without hesitation. He supposed to be there, in the mind of the Normals there can be no other explanation. Unless you do something stupid like open your mouth and give them a reason to think beyond the obvious. Let others lie for you and hide in plain sight.
